A independent and collaborative project

How can we imagine alternative representations of ocean bodies?

In this project, I delved into the connections between breast cancer and ocean pollution. Reflecting on my own experience with female hormonal disorders and holistic medicines, I created this book that reimagines humans’ relationship with nature by unpacking the links between reproductive justice and our environment. The process of making this book includes an outdoor photoshoot, research, ideation, and design. This studio, led by Desma professor Rebecca Mendez, collaborated with an English capstone course led by Elizabeth DeLoughrey. At the end of the course, all students’ work was compiled into a single book, separate from the Desma students’ independent art book. This course was creatively structured around Professor Mendez’s work on DDT pollution in the ocean along California’s coast. I had the honor of viewing the screening series of Mendez’s film “The Sea Around Us” and Rosanna Xia’s award-winning documentary “Out of Plain Sight” at the Hammer Museum.
